This thesis uses the examples of World War I and World War II to display the use of Google Ngram Viewer, a web tool which enables the generation of a graph showing how selected phrases have occurred in a selected corpus of books over the selected year range. By analyzing the Google n - gram corpora and the metadata provided by the Google Ngram Viewer, the distribution of the frequency of the word „war’’ was observed through the chosen corpora of books, ranging in years - from 1800 to 2012, as well as the influence of World War I and World War II over the chosen corpora. The results show that the frequency for the word „war’’ is prone to changes over the years in all observed corpora of books, displaying the ability to indicate historical events, and that the World War I and World War II have had different impacts over the chosen corpora. „Log - odds’’ analysis is used to examine the thickness of volumes published in each corpora during wartime, with the results showing that books published during wars tend to be thinner. In addition, this thesis covers the theory of sociology of war and violence and explains the possibilities of Google Ngram Viewer, in order to further clarify the phenomenon of warfare.
