... More mlade religiozne osobe u hrvatskom društvu pristupaju globalnim trendovima u domeni ljepote, estetske kirurgije i starenja.
Antuna Padovanskog poštivanjem etičkih istraživačkih standarda dobrovoljnosti sudjelovanja, potpisivanja informirane suglasnosti i zajamčene anonimnosti u fazi obrade i interpretacije podataka.
Less
Abstract (english) Introduction: Contemporary society is often described as a consumer or consumeristic society that values physical beauty, attractiveness and vitality. In this context, the physical signs of aging are often mitigated preventively through various beauty industry agents, such as invasive and non-invasive cosmetic surgery, which supports the concept of a socially desirable appearance, the so-called ideal type. Religion, especially Christianity, promotes spiritual development and the holistic
... More integrity of the human person, raising the question of how young religious individuals in Croatian society approach global trends in beauty, cosmetic surgery and aging.
Objective: The objective of this research is to explore the attitudes of religious young people in Croatia toward beauty and aging. The research questions include participants' attitudes toward the societal ideal of beauty, the aesthetics of their own body, cosmetic surgery, and their perception of aging and older individuals.
Methods: A qualitative methodology was applied using individual semi-structured interviews according to COREQ guidelines. The participants were young people aged 18 to 30 from Croatia who identify as religious. The research included seven respondents according to the saturation criterion. The sample was non-probabilistic, purposive, and organized using the snowball method. Data collection was conducted during April and May 2024 in the parish of St. Anthony of Padua in Zagreb, following ethical research standards of voluntary participation, signing informed consent and guaranteed anonymity in the phase of data processing and interpretation. The research was conducted with the permission of the Ethics Committee of the Catholic University of Croatia.
Results: The study included seven participants. The results showed that the participants expressed a critical attitude toward contemporary beauty norms, with an emphasis on unrealistic media images and body transformations through cosmetic surgery. Although they are not immune to societal pressures related to physical appearance, the participants' religious beliefs shaped their critical stance towards physical beauty standards, where they affirmed natural beauty, aging, and old age.
Conclusion: The research highlights the complexity of the relationship between religiosity, aesthetics, and aging among young people, emphasizing the need for further interdisciplinary research on contemporary beauty trends and their (re)shaping by the dimensions of religiosity. Less
