Abstract (english) Bonding, which is most often defined as parental feelings towards a child, is a unique relationship between a parent and child. Previous studies show that the conflict between work and family role and some aspects of father's mental health, are factors affecting the father-infant bonding. Therefore, the aim of this research was to examine how some job characteristics (shift work, flexible working hours, overtime work and number of working hours) are related to work-family conflict, how work-family conflict is associated with depression and anxiety, and to determine the predictive value of the conflicts between work and family role and the father's mental health (depression and anxiety symptoms) for the father-infant bonding. This cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 155 fathers of infants aged between one month and one year. The following measurement instruments were used in this study: Postpartum Bonding Questionnarie (PBQ), Multidimensional Measure of Work–Family Conflict (MMW-FC), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) and general data questionnaire, designed for the purpose of this study. The results have shown that fathers who have less flexibility, who work overtime and who have a higher number of hours per week have higher levels of time-based and strain-based work-family conflict. Further, fathers experiencing a greater work-family conflict at all three levels have higher levels of depression, while fathers who have a greater strain-based and behaviuor-based work-family conflict have higher levels of anxiety. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that strain-based family-work conflict and previous depression predicted a poorer father-infant bonding. Current depression and anxiety did not prove to predict the bonding. Given the importance of these predictors, it is necessary to prevent the development of difficulties that may occur in the father-infant bonding, by early intervention, reducing risk factors, by improving working conditions and enhancing fathers’ mental well-being in their transition to parenthood.
