realizaciju arhitektonske forme istovremeno utječu klima i topografija, tehnološki, urbani i
sadržane mogućnosti, ideje i vrijednosti nekog društvenog, povijesnog i političkog trenutka,
arhitektonskih ostvarenja promotriti komunikaciju hrvatskog nacionalnog identiteta
arhitekturom.
Abstract (english) Architecture can be defined as art and science of organization, designing and use of
space in general. It is an unique phenomena in arts because architecture, unlike other art,
needs to fulfil both aesthetical and practical function. In that sense we can divide architecture
into three categories: profane (secular), sacral (religious) and fortifying (strengthening).
Implementation of architectural form is affected by climate and topography, technological,
urban and socioeconomic development as well as all of the civilizational achievements in a
certain culture. Everything that shapes architectural form is also part of what architecture
communicates within itself. If we consider it based on McLuhan’s teachings, architecture is
media and a message. Media, in this sense, is shown through certain architectural form,
while message consists of possibilities, ideas and beliefs characteristic to certain point in
society, history or politics; as well as aspirations, lifestyles and taste of individuals. Given the
fact there is only few studies connecting communication and architecture, this review article
tries to connect the two fields through theories and elements which are found in the basis of
both fields. Furthermore, this review article will try to look into ways of communicating
Croatian national identity through architecture.
