Abstract (english) The topic of the thesis is Stress and predominant coping mechanisms in undergraduate nursing students at the Croatian Catholic University. The main aspect of this thesis is the recognition of stress levels in students and the prevailing mechanisms of coping with stress that they use.
The paper discusses the concept of stress and the mechanisms of coping with stress, as well as stressors specific to the period of students' lives. The research was conducted at the Croatian Catholic University on first- and third-year undergraduate nursing students.
The aim of the thesis is to increase awareness of the problems faced by students at the Croatian Catholic University in order to better understand the difficulties arising from their student and personal life, and the sum of which can lead to serious mental disorders. Also, this paper is targeting the importance of healthy mechanisms for coping with stress, but also to focus attention on the other side of the department, which may not have an accurate insight into the issues of stress of their own students. It will further be determined whether there is a difference in stress levels and coping mechanisms with respect to the year of study.
Prior to the research, the initial thesis was that first-year students will have higher levels of stress than third-year students, and that third-year students will have more developed mechanisms for coping with stress than first-year students.
Results of the research refuted the hypotheses given that the both groups are under similar levels of stress, there is no statistically significant difference, both groups are under moderate to high levels of stress. Students use similar defence mechanisms regardless of the year and type of study, most common mechanisms for dealing with stress are positive interpretation of the problem, planning to solve the problem, acceptance and social support. A statistically significant difference between full-time and part-time students is visible in mental disengagement coping method, being significantly higher for full-time students. A statistically significant difference is also found between the 1st year students and 3rd year students, where it can be seen that in positive interpretation and religious value the median is significantly higher for respondents attending 3rd year, while in behavioral disengagement and physical isolation median is significantly higher for respondents attending 1st year of undergraduate nursing studies. It is evident that students use healthy mechanisms of coping with stress, while alcohol abuse, denial of problems, and behavioural separation from problem are the least prevalent.
