Music that is played while working is called background music. Numerous studies in psychology that used background music have been conducted. A question arises: can listening to music have an effect on math test results? Results of previous studies have not been consistent. Therefore, this study attempted to discover the effects of background music on math test results, which consisted of easy, intermediate and difficult tasks. Participants in this study were psychology students from the Catholic University of Croatia (N= 69), who were divided into three research groups. The first group listened to classical music, the second to electronic music and the third was the control group and didn’t listen to any music. The research was conducted in Laboratory for Psychological Research at Catholic University of Croatia in individual testing appointments. First, the participants filled out a Questionnaire of preferred music styles and after that, they solved a mathematical knowledge test which consisted of 10 easy, 10 intermediate and 10 difficult tasks. They were given 25 minutes to solve the tasks. Electronic music was an extended version of the song Fade by DJ Alan Walker, while classical music was a composition Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi. Results have shown that there is no effect of background music on the math test scores in general as well as when viewed specifically regarding the difficulty of the tasks. It can be concluded that there is no effect of background music on easy tasks, because tasks on math test were not complex enough. Future research could include attitudes of participants toward music. Furthermore, future research could use mathematical tests that have been validated and with a clear distinction between task difficulty.
