Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and represents a great public health problem in developed countries around the world. In Republic of Croatia, according to Croatia National Cancer Registry from 2015 there were 2748 new diagnosed patients with breast cancer, and 1038 women died. Incidence of breast cancer is rising; mortality remains the same despite the new therapy and Croatian national breast cancer screening programme. Most common treatment is surgical removal of the breast or mastectomy. Mastectomy is a surgical removal of the whole breast which psychologically and physically affects quality of life in female breast cancer patients under the age of 50. The aim of the study was to determine the quality of women's life after mastectomy regarding age and to determine the satisfaction level of mastectomized women by breast reconstruction. Cross-sectional study was conducted on 192 breast cancer female patients. 78 patients (40.6%) were in younger age group between 20 and 49 years old and 114 patients (59.6%) were in older age group between 50 and 79 years old. All participants had undergone mastectomy with breast reconstruction surgery afterwards. Data were collected by standardized questionnaire for cancer patients EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BRECO N23. Mann-whitney U test was used to compare participants quality of life who undergone mastectomy and value of significance for social functioning is less than 5%, p<0,014 with confidence interval of 95% for patients older than 50. Embarrassment during intimate relationships, tested with EORTC QLQ-BRECON23, was noticed at younger aged women with significant value p<0.001 and confidence interval 95%. Patients over 50 are more satisfied with breast reconstruction surgery results. Dissatisfaction with mastectomy and breast reconstruction results affects prognosis and the outcome of the treatment itself.
