Abstract (english) The study explores the meaning in life concept among alcoholics and individuals from the general population, as well as its relationship to personality traits based on the Big Five model. Meaning in life plays important role in general mental health of an individual, but it has been neglected in related researches for a long time. It is defined as a cognizance of harmony, order and purpose in individual's existence, striving for goals that are worth the effort, their realization and an accompanying sense of fulfillment. Clinical and non-clinical samples, namely alcoholics and individuals from the general population, have been compared to the construct of meaning in life. Differences in meaning in life related to the age distribution have been analyzed for both groups. After examining relationship between meaning in life and personality traits, also contribution of personality traits in explanation of meaning in life has been analyzed for both groups. Clinical sample consisted of 78 treated alcoholics from one psychiatric hospital alcoholism ward in Zagreb, while non-clinical sample consisted of 80 participants. Following questionnaires were applied: Purpose in Life Test, IPIP - 100 and a questionnaire on general data made for this research purpose only. Results have shown significant differences in experience of meaning in life between clinical and non-clinical sample, where individuals from the general population experience their life more meaningful. Further, significant differences have been found in perceived meaning in life between early and late middle aged participants of the general population, in a way that middle aged individuals experience their life more meaningful. Meaning in life has significant positive relationship to extraversion, agreeableness, openness and conscientiousness while significantly negative to neuroticism, for both groups. Extraversion and conscientiousness in explanation of meaning in life have shown as significant predictors in the general population, while extraversion and neuroticism in alcoholic, considering that neuroticism was negative predictor. Practical implications of this study will mostly serve to the experts in their work with alcohol addicts.
