Abstract (english) Silence, as an almost forgotten phenomenon in today's postmodern world of incessant noise, is the main subject of study in this paper. A seemingly simple concept reveals its complexity and richness only through deeper research. Silence, despite the generally accepted definitions, is not the mere absence of speech or sound, it is not an antonym of communication, but on the contrary its foundation, its starting point. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the role and meaning of silence in interpersonal communication, thus pointing to the idea that silence is not just a pause in communication, the absence of speech or minimal interactions, but an integral part of successful communication. Silence is analyzed in the context of intrapersonal, interpersonal and digital communication. The philosophical and religious contribution to the understanding of silence is briefly presented and observes the use of silence as a stylistic instrument in film, literature and music, as well as the creative role of silence in artistic creation. Intercultural differences in the interpretation of silence are discussed. In the methodological sense, the paper uses a comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of sources and content and provides an overview of the most important social-humanistic aspects and areas in which silence is a significant component of communication. Investigating the communicative, theological, philosophical, artistic and intercultural aspect of silence, the thesis provides a broader picture and perspective in relation to this under-researched concept.
