Bioethics, whose constant development is mostly the outcome of the advances in modern biotechnology, is an interdisciplinary science that covers many aspects of human life. In order to bridge the gap between bioethics as a scientific discipline and the “ordinary” person, who encounters various bioethical issues, mass media are needed to report on bioethical issues in order to encourage discussions in the society. We can say that bioethics, as a scientific discipline, can be present and materialized only in a world with the media presence. The main aim of this paper is to explore the ways a wide range of bioethical topics has been presented in Croatian print media and its frequency, so that we can get a complete insight into the relationship between print journalism in Croatia and bioethics. In this paper, we are using quantitative-qualitative content analysis during the specific weeks from November 1, 2019 to February 31, 2020. The analysis of the daily newspapers 24sata, Jutarnji list, Večernji list and Slobodna Dalmacija, and the weekly newspapers Glas Koncila, Međimurje and 7Dnevno during the established period showed that, although there is a great interest in reporting on bioethical topics, bioethics is still scientifically unknown in Croatian print media. Also, the informative approach dominates reporting on various bioethical topics, there are relatively few texts that encourage critical-analytical observation, while tendencies for sensational reporting are present only in certain topics. The scientific contribution of this paper is in a deeper understanding of the relationship between bioethics and print journalism in Croatia by presenting the frequency and analysing the context of media reports on a wide range of bioethical topics.
