The Vukovar Hospital played a key role during the Serbian aggression against Vukovar. During the three-month siege of Vukovar, it became one of the most important symbols of resistance in the aggression of the JNA and Serbian forces on Vukovar. During the siege of Vukovar, the hospital in Vukovar was under constant enemy fire, despite the large red cross that marked a protected place according to the rules of the Geneva Convention. Nevertheless, even in such difficult conditions, the doctors there provided medical assistance while respecting the fundamental human and civilizational values. During the three-month siege of the city, the hospital outgrew its medical and health role and became a source of life, community and solidarity. Although the hospital was a refuge for all needy people, regardless of their religious or national affiliation, and despite the signed Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Croatia and the JNA on the evacuation of the wounded and sick, after the occupation of Vukovar on November 18.–20., 1991., the JNA and Serbian forces committed are numerous crimes against the wounded, civilians and employees of the Vukovar hospital. Thanks to the initiative of Dr. Vesna Bosanac and Dr. Juraj Njavro, the hospital was turned into a Place of Remembrance - Vukovar Hospital in 1991, as an eternal witness of resistance, life and togetherness during the aggression against Vukovar.
